Manual Lymphatic Drainage FAQ’s

What should I expect when receiving MLD (Manual Lymphatic Drainage)?

Clients are asked to wear or bring in a tank top/tee and shorts or leggins as the client is clothed throughout the session. The protocol for this modality addresses the superficial lymphatic system resulting in a relaxing experience. This MLD protocol consists of the practitioner using very light, gentle, pumping and half circular guided movements and strokes towards specific areas on the body with the pads of the tips of their fingers.

How often can I receive MLD ?

Ensuring and encouraging optimal lymphatic flow depends on your individual needs, 2-5 sessions are recommended in a consecutive daily series every three months as maintenance. This is discussed and determined between you, your MLD practitioner and possibly your health care provider prior to receiving your first session.

Why is a series of consecutive daily sessions recommended?

Because of the structure (delicate) and the way our Lymphatic System functions (slowly), a series of 2-5 consecutive daily sessions are recommended depending on the individuals needs. The daily consistency of this MLD protocol ensures optimal functioning of our lymphatic system.

How many consecutive daily sessions should I choose?

The number of consecutive daily sessions are a suggested amount by the MLD practitioner and possibly your health care provider. Determination of number of daily sessions are based on the individuals needs and health circumstance.

Can I still receive MLD if I am not having a procedure/surgery and am otherwise healthy?

Absolutely! Incorporating lymphatic body work on a regular basis could be a very beneficial part of ones wellness journey.

How can I incorporate MLD into my recovery and healing process if I have a scheduled medical procedure/surgery in the future?

We suggest speaking with your health care provider and or surgeon about MLD and if it could be a part of your recovery. Upon approval from your health care provider, this MLD protocol may be performed both pre and post surgery/procedure in 2 -5 consecutive daily sessions pre surgery/procedure (not the day of or before). Post surgery/procedure MLD sessions may begin anywhere from 3-14 days in a consecutive daily series of 2-5 sessions. This is determined with your MLD practitioner at time of consultation/booking.

Who should NOT receive Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

Unless approved and referred by your medical care provider with written permission, MLD is contraindicated with certain medications, organ failure, present infection, some cancers (depending on where individual is at in treatments), high risk pregnancy, unattended dental issues. Recent injections (botox, fillers, cortisol, etc.) a wait period of at least 2 weeks from time of injection is recommended.
